Government Benefits for EMR/EHR Companies

As a result of the 2009 signing of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), the government has put in place a program that provide $1.2 billion in benefits to companies that move to an electronic medical records format for their offices. This is the largest step made to date to encourage medical offices to move to this improved and streamlined record management system.

EMR/EHR companies that wish to take advantage of these incentives will be required to meet government set standards in reference to “meaningful use”. This standard means that companies must show that by using EHR technology, their office will improve the quality of health care they can provide. As this standard is met, the government will pay out benefits in the form of Medicare and Medicaid payments.

The government has put language in the law that encourages companies to begin this transition as early as possible and could provide additional financial benefits for these early adopters. These incentives could be anywhere from $41,000 up to $63,750 depending on the patient volume percentage of patients receiving Medicaid assistance. These payments will be paid out over a period of 5 years.
